I've been doing a training course all day for some freelance work - a nice change but I'm going to have to get an awful lot quicker to earn a crust. So this is a shot from yesterday - I was dog-less after our coffee and cake so nipped into nearby Magdelene College. When I was doing my PhD it was the only remaining all male bastion in Cambridge but had voted to go mixed. There was a very right wing group called the Black October group who prided themselves on objecting to this radical move. So I've always been a bit prejudiced against it. But I must say that it was teeming with girls and the chapel and hall are small and cosy and everybody was friendly - including this chap even though I was in his way in the doorway. There are still two all-female colleges - and a college for mature female students. In my view at least the first two of these should go mixed even if the female:male ratio isn't quite 50:50 - women are perfectly able to hold their own academically these days.
Three good things:
1. The dishwasher repair man has fixed the fridge freezer.
2. He has identified why his expensive new part for the dishwasher blew up.
3. It's Friday.
Love this , so different from your usual & I love the POV & colour! As an ''old girl'' are you allowed to walk around the colleges of Cambridge at you will or confined to your old stamping ground or did you sneak in?
A big fave!! All sounds lots of hard work & new things to learn but you can do it..............yes you can!!
@happypat So long as the colleges aren't closed anybody can walk around although some of them now charge. I've got an 'old boys' card that lets me go in for free. Also residents of the city can go in for free as well - for a lot of people it's a rather nice route to work. I did feel a bit conspicuous in Magdelene as it's not one of the big touristy ones but everybody ignored me or said hello!.
@judithg Well that's wonderful I thought it would all be very hush hush & reverent with porters at the door...I would be far too nervous to just walk in!
So interesting to hear about Magdalene College - now more so after reading my mother's diary in 1929 when visiting it. Also Oxford where the Oxford Group was formed which sounds a bit like the Black October group!
Love the tones and the light, beautiful, and what a helpful dishwasher man!!! My mum wanted the cooker repair man to look at the fridge door hinge and he said it would be second call out fee!!!!
@ruthmouch How rude! It's the British Gas man - he noticed that the light keeps blinking when he was on the phone ordering the dishwasher part last week. All these 'PCB's are very expensive - I hate to think what our monthly charges will go up to!
@busylady Sadly not photos!! Scientific copy writing - it took us all 2.5 h to do one example that should have been 2 min - the trainer says they're not all that hard - hope not!
the post processing is wonderful judith...the scene oozes classic Cambridge (not that I've ever experienced classic Cambridge....but it's what I think it should be ) !
A big fave!! All sounds lots of hard work & new things to learn but you can do it..............yes you can!!
Yay for Fridays. :)
As for your training session, we all start out slow at new things and then hopefully get up to a good speed eventually! But it does take time.
