My friend Jenna and I finally got over to Houghton Mill to do a walk we've had our eye on for ages. Nigel and I have walked there before but gone the wrong way and ended up with a short walk but we had worked out that you need to go through the Mill and across the river to get a decent stretch. The meadows there have been flooded for most of the winter (and last 'summer' - I use the term loosely) hence part of the delay but they were beautiful today. We saw numerous dragonflies and demoiselles as well as swans attending to young families, grebes, herons, cormorants, swallows, warblers, very posh houses, thatched cottages...altogether a very satisfactory walk. This is a male Banded Agrion I believe. Not perfect focus but it was blowing about in the wind and every time I got myself in position Monty scurried round and scared them off.
Three GT:
1. Jenna's map reading though I am terribly lazy at letting her sort out directions and then I can't repeat the walk.
2. A very good sandwich from the Co-Op in Godmanchester half way round.
3. Very friendly people en route.
Your walk sounds wonderful...plenty of wildlife but houses to look at too, I must have a good walk this weekend...so lazy!! going on a farm tramp tomorrow so will get a bit of exercise then.
Your Banded Agrion is very pretty ...we do learn some things on this site...I have learnt about oxymorons today!!!
@quietpurplehaze Yes but I was carrying so much stuff - water for me, water for dog, dog chews, human chews, sun cream, hoops etc that I put my camera away after a fairly short time - will have to go back and make Nigel carry the 'stuff'!
This is beautifully sharp and looks great enlarged. Sounds like a great walk with such a lot to see. The trouble with going to somewhere like that with husbands is that they want to walk and not stop every 2 mins for interesting photo opps!
You're very knowledgeable when it comes to fly species. I always just say it's a fly in my shots :o) I've never seen one of these before. It's quite a pretty one xx
