Another day working to get ready for the new shed - I hope we like it - Nigel's tennis elbow is not being done any favours at all. At one point I was feeling a bit redundant as Adam and Nigel did the heavy stuff so I went off and potted up some of the 'seedlings' that are now proper plants - quite pleased with myself especially as the foxgloves look really good and being biennial they are expensive for a big plant (that only does one year's service because the slugs eat any seedlings that may try to appear).
So anyway - my onions that shouldn't be flowering - the first of the strawberries ripening and saddle and spade in the temporary 'shed'.
Three GT:
1. Adam in fit condition to help with slabs after a night out/sleep over (not sure if they're still referred to as that!)
2. Really heavy work finished and I think I've even finished trudging to Homebase etc.
3. Going to visit Rachel for lunch on Monday .
2.
And you did all that in the rain!!!? I'm impressed with your strawberries, but you really should pick off your onion flowers - apparently it shows they're under stress and can lead to split onions which don't store well.
Strawberries ripening, joy are way ahead! Not too sure why your onions are flowering! Dig one ip and have a look. You are a busy bee, keep the momentum going! Foot result, fractured distal 2nd metatarsal, so I wasn't being a wimp after all!
@busylady I don't understand onion growing Judith - I planted sets last year and ended up with very small onions so I thought I'd plant them again this year (bad idea?!) they are now making about three onions each - which is what you say is a bad thing. So I'm thinking the only useful thing may be nice flowers! If I take the buds off can I save them?
@lucypics omg - broken toe!! (Translating!) hope you've got it up on a pouffe with everybody running around you. Actually a bone might be good news in terms of mending - so long as you keep off it!
Blow the onion flowering ...I think they look very pretty.......like little Moscow turrets.
You have been so busy in your garden why can I not get into any gardening yet.....too lazy I think!
Your collage is lovely specially the seat & spade collection.
I think I need a new shed to encourage me!
I especially like the strawberry shot with the two different colours. One day I'm dreaming of having a garden as well and there will also be strawberries :).
@judithg Well I'm not good at it either but I'm learning! I'm told that as soon as you see the flower buds forming you should snap them off. If you wait for them to flower and seed they would make a good photo opp but not much else. When I tried to store my onions which had gone to seed, they had produced a sort of extra bit on the side which rotted when stored - bad news. I think they start to produce seeds too early if they are not watered enough, but that doesn't explain this year when we've had plenty of rain. I grow all mine from sets, but I do know of people who swear by growing them from seed. Trouble is you have to start them in January! Hope this helps, but probably not!
@judithg Well I do plant mine deeper than they recommend as the birds sometimes pull them out. Once they've started growing they sort themselves out and grow mostly above the surface.
Oh no - your strawberries looked wonderful and much further ahead than mine. It's probably birds of slugs - we have to net ours.
