Dad's cousin gave me a copy of my grandparent's wedding photo. They didn't have much money to spare but clearly ran to impressive bouquets. The bride's sister and brother are on the left and the groom's brother and sister-in-law (Uncle Frank and Auntie Emily) are on the right. My granddad started work in a cotton mill when he was 11 years old, he used to go to school in the morning and work in the afternoon. He had a beautiful singing voice and could have been a chorister at Liverpool cathedral but his United Reformed mother wouldn't allow him to 'convert' to Church of England - he would have had a very different life if she had. My grandmother also worked in the cotton mill as did most of their relatives - it just varied a bit as to whether they were spinner, weaver or looked after the boiler. When dad was a boy growing up in Rochdale he used to have his tea at home and then go next door to Uncle Frank's and have another tea. Auntie Emily was very old when she used to visit and bring knitted clothes for dolls which we used to try and make fit on a dolly but they never seemed to! There is another photo outside in the back yards of the back to back houses - it doesn't look too glamorous but they look happy! Grandma is the daughter of Frederick Hide the fire bobby as mentioned in yesterday's photo.
Really interesting shot Judith. I just love these old photos, and the stories involved. I have many similar shots and they convey a family history and lives that become far more relevant as you get a little older yourself. (Me that is).
I love these old black & white photos Judith....how fitting even for today this look is dress wise. The bouquets are a little OTT but everything else is spot on! I don't think that could be said about some of the fends in wedding styles!
I would be proud to have this photo on my dining room wall of b/ w pictures,
I really like her smile and that wonderful nostalgic feeling of these old photos. Liked your narrative, too. Sorry I'm so behind on commenting, the little ones keep me quite busy.
How lovely to have this superb photo. A great treasure to have these family photos. Love to see the style of clothes and shoes in these. Interesting read on the family history.
What a lovely family photo - such history and character. They always seemed to run to impressive bouquets and I like the idea of your dad having one tea followed by a second!
I would be proud to have this photo on my dining room wall of b/ w pictures,
