I did a new walk today with Monty, @helenmoss and our friend Jenna (and four dogs). It was in the depths of the country at Hatley St George with lovely views of the Cambridgeshire/Bedfordshire border. The soil looks fantastic ploughed - no flints like you see in some places. A beautiful day for the beginnning of Autumn - and happy birthday plus one day to Monty (afraid I forgot it yesterday!) - he's 7.
Happy Birthday Monty - and I'm envious of all of you going on such a fantastic looking walk. It's images like these that remind me how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the country!
A mere stripling then....disgraceful Monty, fancy forgetting your birthday! Extra rations tonight!

It was a lovely walk - I just looked up William Henely, whose grave we saw at Cockayne Hatley church - he was a poet (that lovely verse on the stone was from his own poem - here is the link - it's beautiful - I can't understand why it's not more widely known (or maybe it is and I'm being dim?) http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Margaritae_Sorori). Also, interesting random fact - and I quote from Wikipedia here - "From the age of 12, Henley suffered from tuberculosis of the bone that resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee in 1868–69.[2] According to Robert Louis Stevenson's letters, the idea for the character of Long John Silver was inspired by Stevenson's real-life friend Henley." Plus, his daughter, and only child (died at 5 - I spotted that on the family grave and thought how sad it was) was the inspiration for Wendy in Peter Pan.
@helenmoss well good heavens! Wish I'd taken a photo of his grave now. Fascinating info - poor 'Wendy'. I'll have to check out more of his poems. My grandad had TB in his knee but they fused his joint so his leg was stiff rather than amputating it - wouldn't have been as dramatic a look for LJ Silver! Thanks
