Back to the Wind

Back to the Wind

Lincoln, Rhode Island

I went to Lincoln Woods at lunch just to see if there was anything interesting going on. It's extremely cold, and the wind had kicked up and was extremely bitter, so I was surprised to find several people on Olney Pond ice fishing. The wind had effectively blown most of the snow off the pond, which made walking out to this ice fisherman rather challenging. If you've never walked on a frozen pond, trust me when I tell you that's it's not smooth. The ice is very uneven, and without snow on it, it's extremely slippery. The fisherman in this photo was not camera shy. Rather, he was just keeping his back to the wind since he wasn't wearing a face mask and the wind made it tough to stand out there for several hours. He was using a traditional rig, and actually had five of them setup around his sled. (Five is the legal limit in Rhode Island.) So far today, all he'd encountered were pike that were stripping his traps of bait. (They're pretty good at eating the bait off the hook without getting caught.) So far, he hadn't caught anything in this section, although it's normally a good spot for bass and trout. The ice thickness today was almost 24-inches which should tell you just how cold its been this winter.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, and boost black. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Lovely photo! I've never actually heard much about ice fishing before so this was really interesting! Sounds absolutely freezing though, don't think I could go fishing in that weather! :) x
