Large Glacial Erratic

Large Glacial Erratic

Lincoln, Rhode Island

Near the entrance to Lincoln Woods State Park, and dominating the first large campsite along the ring road, sits this extremely large glacial erratic. It serves as further evidence of the retreat of the Wisconsinan Glacier about 12,000 years ago. (That, you may recall from an earlier photo, is the glacier that created the kettle pond that rests in the center of this park.) A glacial erratic is a large boulder that was broken from bedrock and carried by a glacier hundreds of kilometers to a new location. Lincoln Woods State Park is strewn with them, making it a very popular bouldering site for rock climbers.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, and boost white. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-HjKLRzs/0/XL/2014%2009%2019_0002%20copy-XL.jpg
Interesting thing! We have one in (I think) Espelkamp too, that's also in the Minden-Lübbecke county :) I've never been there though, should go there but I don't think it's very interesting haha :D

@justaspark That erratic would have been left behind by the Weichsel glaciation retreat about 13,000 years ago! You actually still have several active glaciers in the Alps. They're amazing to see, if you ever get the chance.

@kannafoot I'm from the Northern German low elevations (Norddeutsches Tiefland) as you may have noticed, but if I ever get to the Alps I'll definitely watch out for them :)

What an interesting find and I can see how it would be popular among not only rock climbers but the locals as well!
