Mother and baby Brown Booby - no getting lost in the jungle for this shot either!
Instead I had to balance on the edge of a rather nasty limestone cliff - no disasters. There are all stages of nesting at this new site, from mothers on eggs, newly hatched featherless ones, these cute fluffy ones through to ones going through the awkward stage losing the baby down and getting adult feathers - quite ugly stage really. You can tell there are few predators on the island with this lot nesting on the ground .... usually on the edge of a cliff
@girlie@jenrobcarr@jannaellen@alia_801 thanks all - I have been hoping to get a shot of a baby since I got here in Jan - apparently they nest throughout the year. The longer I am here the more I am regarded as semi-local and the locals are telling me places to get good photos. @alia_801 ooh if it looks like a hoodie it had better avoid the shopping centres or it will get banned - I read today about a 4you banned from a shopping centre somewhere in Oz because he had a hoodie on
Showing off your bobbies AGAIN? LOL - these are cute though - the baby is almost as big as the Mumma! Come to think of it so are my 'babies' ...Glad you didn't need a search party this time ;)
@notliz yeah I know - I can't help myself! LOL You'd love the name of he Chinese restaurant here then - it is called Lucky Ho's and I always giggle at the name
@lbmcshutter LMAO!!! That is AWESOME! My husband made me stay in the car the other day when he went to get some machinery quotes...Apparently it's not normal to laugh hysterically every time he asks "how much for that hoe?" I usually follow up with "sweetheart if you have to ask, you can't afford her" ... hence being left in the car ....
@shepardx2 no dad nicked off on wing when I came along - in the background there is another mother nesting @notliz Awesome! You have the same sense of humour as me, I'd pretty much say something similar, I couldn't help myself! @timandelke Not as glad as I am! My ankle is still recovering, I scraped it badly on my jungle walk - a rotten log collapsed under me and I ended up with a nasty graze, and being on a joint - constantly flexing, the healing cuts ache as the skin goes taut, but it is much better now, and kind people tell me about "safer" places to get photos
Wonderful shot of them together. He's not nearly as ugly as some baby creatures are. It's great that you were able to capture this and share it with us, but be careful out there. ;)
@intrepidme@bella_ss@voodoochild - thanks - I have promised my mum I will be more careful - thousands of kilometres away she still worries about me, and I forgot I set up her PC to check my shots that I also load on flickr and I think she nearly had kittens when she read of my first baby booby bird adventure in the jungle, even though it was days later and I was home and safe and well ...... I think we never get too old for our mums to stop worrying @shantwin - believe me they start out a lot uglier - I have captured a newly hatched one and there was no cute fluff, just grey skin and blind eyes
@lbmcshutter That is so true Megan, I still worry about my grown kids too! Next time take a rope and tie yourself to a tree!! I'm just saying that for your mum :)
@alia_801 ooh if it looks like a hoodie it had better avoid the shopping centres or it will get banned - I read today about a 4you banned from a shopping centre somewhere in Oz because he had a hoodie on
