I came to the Flinders Ranges to see this wonderful landscape but also to try to get some shots of this magnificent raptor, the largest bird of prey in Australia with wing spans up to approx 2.3metres. I saw many soaring high, one huge one on a fence post, but when I turned the car around to get a shot a passing truck startled him into flight away from his convenient roost. I stopped the car to get a shot of one hovering low over some trees, the light was not great, but I thought I'd try. As I snapped away I took another look at the rocks and there was another eagle roosting on the rocks. As I watched this magnificent bird took off, his eponymous tail in the characteristic wedge shape.
The weather has worsened and I have had to drive 40km just to get internet access - in the heart of Wilpena Pound there is only satellite internet and the low cloud prevents connection. This means it will be another day or two before I can catch up on commenting on everyone's shots, I apologise. It also has meant that that plans for a scenic flight and aerial shots has been ruled out this time. Perhaps I will return here in winter when the hot air balloon rides resume.
