Above the gates of the walled area of Angkor Thom are 23 m towers at the cardinal points, the faces each face the cardinal points and hit is debated if the faces are those of the King or that of the boddhisattva or a combination of the two.
Again these may be familiar to people who have seen Tomb Raider.
I loved those giant faces, to me they were calm, peaceful and benevolent, guardians to the land they surveyed.
If you look carefully just below the chinline there are a series of smaller faces carved into the stone

You have great shots. I love learning all about another place, thanks for the commentary to help explain. These are lovely faces and you captured them well.
That is really cool! Not just the huge towering faces but the smaller series of faces too. I would love being able to look out and see these, or at least know that they're nearby as if guarding the land.
Gosh - the devotion and work that went into those pillars.... wonderful. Fabulous capture - the B&W works wonderfully. (Wonder how it would look in sepia too.....)
