Banksy defaced - when is it street art and when is it vandalism?
Prior to visiting Bristol I was unaware that the infamous street artist Banksy is from Bristol. I quite like good street art - and really dislike tagging. I like what I have seen of Banksy's work, so many of them are clever and have some artistic merit (in my opinion/aesthetic values). This particular work is at least one floor above ground level and has been defaced. It is not the first time, previously I understand it was restored. This time it seems to have been shot with paint balls or paint filled water bombs. I cannot understand why people deface public art - unless perhaps they are wowsers who don't approve of the subject matter which makes light of adultery - I think the work is fun and am sad that someone has defaced it.
I have other shots where I zoomed in on just the art bt I wante dto share with you the wall it is on too to give some sense of context and location.
When I was younger I did some painting and a lot of sketching. I always loved the idea of painting a mural one day. Perhaps that is why I like street art. Bristol has an annual festival where artists are invited to paint murals/large street art works. When I was in Berlin I enjoyed seeing the art on sections of The Wall done by artists and street artists. The closest I have achieved to date is a fridge door done in the style of Van Gogh's Night Cafe. I t was an old fridge I was given when I was re-establishing my life after a long term relationship broke down and I was starting again.
I think I remember seeing this on my last trip to Bristol too. Did you see the big steampunk bird mural? That was my favourite :)
Nice capture of this one.
It really is a shame that it has been defaced. I haven't heard of him so I had a look at his website, there's some funny stuff there. Thanks, I learnt something today :)
No further instalment for us Megan? I've been hanging out for more ;-)
@bella_ss there is more to share but there are also some things I am trying to get sorted out i my head at the moment which are affecting my perspective a little
I'm always impressed by people who can do artistic things, and always saddened when folk go out of their way to ruin nice things for the hell of it. Great shot though.
(I am champing at the bit to ring you up and say "... and what happened then...?!" But obviously I'll resist ..!)
