Markt, Bruges by lbmcshutter

Markt, Bruges

The Market Square in Bruges is lovely, on my first morning there a market was set up in the square - fresh fruit - heavenly looking trays of strawberries, vegies, meat (some very interesting sausages) and cheese stalls, flowers - loads of tulips and roses, and baked goods - I had a wonderful warm waffle dusted with powdered sugar - just perfect!
I love the distortion in this shot from my lens, it is not a massively leaning tower, just he angle of the shot combined with my 24-105 lens - I wanted to have options whilst playing sightseer without carrying a heavy camera bag and there is a price to pay in distortion.
The square has apparently been a market square since 958 - that is a pretty impressive history. Especially to an Australian. The red brick building on the right is the post office. The middle structure is the Provincial Court and on the left of the photo with the tower is the Historium. So many magnificent buildings big and small over this lovely city, not a great place to drag your suitcase though - the cobblestones everywhere make that a difficult task. Other than that it is a good place to see by foot. Plenty of places to stop for a snack, a waffle, some frites, chocolate, belgian beer (I'm told it is good but I'm not a beer drinker) and a number of other tasty delights - the hot chocolate from Godiva Chocolate shop was the best I have ever had. Mussels are supposed to be a local delicacy - one I did not sample as I am not a fan.
yum sounds like you had a feast! this is a beautiful building and image x

Beautiful, and I love the slant too! Apparently the river got silted up and the city wasn't on the flying route for bombers during the war, which is why so many of the medieval buildings and streets survived unchanged. Hm I feel a trip back there...did you mention chocolate.....?!

It's always a little hard to get my head around how old some of these buildings are. The food sounds delicious, especially the chocolate.
