Motorway views of Stonehenge at 40mph - through the windscreen
I know I have met some people who felt disappointed that Stonehenge can be seen from the motorway and this, for them, diminishes the majesty or mysticism or impact of this iconic place. Not for me. I grew up dreaming of visiting such iconic sites (and sights) around the world, and have been lucky (and worked very hard) to manage to see quite a few. Current count is some 37 countries on 5 continents and that makes me very happy. I have lived and worked in 7 countries on 3 continents.
Stonehenge is a magic mystical place for me, the crowds seem to disappear (as do the cars on the motorway) it doesn't matter that you cannot (usually) walk among the stones or to touch them, again for me that enhances the mystery.
I remember walking around the stones at Stonehenge many years ago, can't you do this any more? What a traveler you are, you have been everywhere man! x
Nice capture! I have a few pics like this from our last visit too :) Stonehenge is quite impressive, but I think I prefer Avebury for its less-touristiness and bigger circle :)
@jenrobcarr@tigerdreamer generally people are not permitted to walk in the circle and among the stones - there are pathways keeping people at a distance and a low rope fence to encourage you to stay away. Apparently it is possible to book onto a special visit at sunset occasionally where people can walk among the stones and of course druids etc use the site at
the solstices.
@alia_801 I like Avebury too - but I love anything like that - was a little underwhelmed by woodhenge though - we went to theStanton Drew stone circle just outside Bristol too which was fun
Just popping in for a quick look at everyone's shots. Love this one; such a beautiful capture. Have missed seeing all your beautiful shots, although I often pop in and have a quick look through when I have no time to comment.
I think it's great that you can see it from the road.... and to be honest I wasn't remotely aware of the traffic when I was walking around... it really seemed to be in its own mystical bubble. Everyone was listening to the audio-phone-things and we spoke in hushed voices...
That's a unique take on a Stonehenge shot, I like it! I took my photos through the fence, we had to get to Heathrow so didn't go in. I was really glad I could see it from the road.
You really are a seasoned traveller Megan, that is quite an amazing count you have. I'm still working on mine :)
Are you there now? the history is interesting but as a strict believer only in things that are real, its just collected stones, and I guess my house would fit that description too. sorry to be such a killjoy. But on the travelling front you're the dude. I used to think you were CIA.
I was only at Avebury, but now which I'd gone to Stonehenge. Maybe I'll convert to Druidism. No, I'm not going to google that to see if it's a real thing!
@chewyteeth I love that you thought I was CIA - makes me feel like my life is a little more exciting and glamorous than is the reality and I am not complaining about the reality as I think I have been to some wonderful places, seen some amazing sights and sites and had some amazing opportunities and experiences
@lbmcshutter@chewyteeth ~ Oh, it's just paganism? I'm likely already there-ish. As long as there are no animal sacrifices expected in this day and age.
the solstices.

Paganism?
Just flower garlands and lots of festivals. ;)
