Praying Mantis by olivetreeann

Praying Mantis

This is really not a very good picture (totally over-exposed which I didn't realize until it was too late!), but I was so excited to see this fellow crawling along the ground at our friends' home that I had to attempt a shot. Of course, my friends now think I'm certifiably crazy but it was exciting to have the opportunity to take a snap of one the insect world's strangest looking bugs!
Great capture and lighting. The vine-covered lattice makes a nice background.

@bkbinthecity Thank you Brian! I would not even have noticed him but while we were eating lunch he crawled out from hiding and our host saw him and said, "Oh the Praying Mantis is back!" I jumped right up and got my camera!

@digitalrn Thank you Rick! I was really surprised that this one was not too put off by my camera. He stayed pretty calm unless the camera got too close for comfort and then he would back off a little.

I like the idea of you crawling along the ground to the astonishment of your friends - well worth it - what a cutey

@nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole!
@janetoner Thanks Jane! lol I don't crawl on the ground- physically I just can't as I've got arthritis in both knees. But I do have a "technique" of putting the camera on the ground and using the focus light to help me aim the camera in the right direction. Of course crawling on the ground would look even more ridiculous, but the camera on the ground method raises a few eyebrows too!

Great catch, Ann! Love the shot. It looks like he's climbing up to surface. I love how he's not just green. He's already starting to blend! What a find!! I have yet to see one of those. Now that I have the cardinal, maybe one of these will be my next goal to get. ... And just an FYI - all of us 365ers are certifiable.... You know what lengths we go through to get a shot! lol

Well captured.

the overexposure lighting on the bug defined its lines and the lattice fence and greenery made for a really nice backdrop. good catch!

@nadaa Thank you Nada!
@summerfield Thank you Vikki! Now that I've seen how some of the folks in the camera club used light room to salvage their pictures, I think I'd get advice on how to save this. But it is what it is.
