This picture is a dream come true!! Jeff and I drove out to the Bushkill Boat landing by the Delaware River tonight as the moon began to rise. All the hype about this super Super Moon lived up to my expectations. It truly looked monstrous as it rose above the trees on the horizon. I took shots with both the big Canon and the new Power Shot. In the end, this was my favorite of all the pictures I took. I literally cried when I uploaded it. I couldn't believe I'd actually taken it. Thanks Bev for your tip- I did exactly as you said and here is the result!
@summerfield Thank you Vikki! I got some nice ones with the EOS too, but this was my favorite. It was a little tricky using the macro to take the moon shots, but it had more of the zoom effect than the other lens. Without a tripod I did get some hand movement. I was able to use my little itty bitty tripod on the Power Shot hence no motion blur. So everyday I'll be working with both cameras and I'm really enjoying the macro lens on the EOS!
@olivetreeann - i'm always successful with moon shots using my p&s. i've only recently 'discovered' the best setting to get moon shots with my nikon but i still prefer the details i get with the p&s. btw, when you say 'macro' lens, it's the small attachment, right?
@summerfield The 55 to 250 mm lens. It says "macro 1.1/3.6ft" on it. The small lens says "wide angle". Am I not understanding what they are really used for. I wouldn't be surprised if I am! However, I am finding that I can pretty much type in a question at You Tube and there are a thousand videos with the answer!
@olivetreeann - that's funny, i had never used that big lens for macros. in fact, i've used it only once and i always preferred to use the raynox attachment with the 18-55. well, i say you're getting the hang of it and maybe one day you will be showing me how to use the darn thing. :-)
@libertylady Thank you Alice and thank you so much for the fav. I was told by another 365er who has a Power Shot that the best setting to use was AV and go with the default settings. But I had watched a You Tube video (actually a couple) that recommended ISO 200 and a setting between f11 and f8. According to the menu in my camera the aperature was set at f6.3 which is much lower than what was recommended but that was the default setting and it worked perfectly. I hope that answers your question. One other thing I learned from the videos was to have the WB set on daylight. I know that seems odd, but the moon is reflecting the sun and is therefore just as bright as it even though the sky is not. As you can see from above, setting it to daylight allowed the camera to pick up some great detail that would otherwise be overexposed.
@andrewkru Yes! And when it was closer to the horizon, it was closer to orange. Absolutely stunning! The next Super Moon comes in Sept. I hope the sky will cooperate with you then Andrew.
@alia_801 I knew you would use the scientific name! (o:
@neatz Thank you Anita- see above response to Alice for details.
My thanks to all of you!! And a special thanks to all who fav'd this. I can't tell you how excited I am- first to have taken it, and then to see that your views, comments and favs helped to put it on the Trending Page! I've said it many times before, but I have no problem saying it again- 365 is the best community in the world!
@maggiemae I did a lot of research before I got this camera because there's no turning back now! I also knew I wanted to stick with Canon because in spite of its limitations, I did like my previous p & s. I wanted to keep the same standards on my macros, but I really wanted a zoom that had umph and power behind it. This model was advertised with a 50x zoom and it is everything that it's cracked up to be. It has not disappointed me yet. I love this camera! As far as the settings- they were recommended to me by another 365er who has taken some nice moon shots with her Power Shot and I also got a few tips off of YouTube. For more details see my reply to Alice above.
@altadc Thank you Alta! This shot was taken with a point and shoot Canon Power Shot. Many p & s cameras can now take a good moon shot so you don't have to go crazy with equipment anymore to catch a good shot.
Great shot, Ann!! I knew you could do it! So glad I could help with in the settings department! I didn't get out early enough to get the color you got. Mine is standard moon color. I might post it in one of my other albums. Debating. Congrats on TP and PP! Well deserved! Fav :)
@olivetreeann I posted mine but yours looks so much better in comparison! Probably because you did the extra tips from YouTube. I might have to give them a go to see if I can hone my moon shots.
@vickisfotos Thank you Vicki! @prttblues I basically followed your directions Bev and the only thing I changed was the ISO. I think the camera had it on 100, and I upped it to 200. I may also have made sure that the AWB was set on daylight- that was the biggest tip I got from the videos. @redy4et Thank you Elizabeth! And thank you so much for the fav!! @bill_fe Thank you Bill! Awww, thank you for the fav that represents more than one! @vesna0210 Thank you Vesna!
@nicolecampbell Thank you Nicole! And thank you so much for the fav!! I am thinking that if my 50x zoom on the Power Shot could do this, your camera and lens must be able to as well! So don't give up on a clear shot just yet. Check out the videos on YouTube- there might be something in there you haven't tried yet.
Absolutely AWESOME! SO well done. Our moon shot was a bust as I couldn't get a clear shot at moonrise.. too many trees and then some clouds streaked in. I am trying again on Sept 9.
@nancih Thanks Nanci! If I'd tried to take it at home, I would have run into a similar problem with the trees. So we went to the river knowing there'd be more of a horizon there. The other alternative would have been to put a ladder up to the roof!
