Light Summer Reading? by pasadenarose

Light Summer Reading?

It's STILL too hot to venture outside. Did I mention this was my VACATION week?
So here is yet another indoor shot, this time of my latest bedtime reading material.

The Onion Field is a true story, written by a retired Los Angeles police officer.
Way back in 1963, 2 plain clothes policemen were kidnapped from Hollywood and driven approximately 100 miles north to an agricultural area. One of the officers was shot to death in an onion field and left in a ditch, the other was able to escape, running and running through the fields in the dark, until he found a farmer on a tractor who was working his land.
They caught the suspects within a day or two, and they were convicted. One was never released from prison, the other spent his life in and out of jail and ultimately died behind bars.
It's a very disturbing story and I'm glad I finally finished the book. On to something lighter, please. :-)
Very nice composition.

Great shot! It sounds like a fascinating story but I am like you sometimes real life is too depressing.

Great photo! Sounds like an interesting book, but with that plot line I would not call it light reading. Light reading is when the girl and guy fall in love and live happily ever after........

I tend to read such heavy things. Try one called Follow the River. Pretty amazing!

@amandal
Thanks for the reading recommendation. :-) I looked it up on Amazon and found more than one book by that title. I'm guessing it's the one by James Alexander about a woman kidnapped by Indians? It sounds riveting.

Even though I had wanted to move on to something lighter, I immediately dug my nose into a book recommended to me by my SIL...'Unbroken', about a man and his ordeal as a POW during WWII.
I haven't gotten very far yet, but I can already see how his unstoppable spirit must have come into play in helping him survive what I think was about 2 years of starvation and torture in POW camp in Japan.

So much for light reading, eh? LOL
I'm just so moved by people who are able to struggle through things that most of us would crumble under. It makes it really hard to tolerate hearing complaints from those around us (or even ourselves), about petty things that won't even matter next week.

Yes, you got the right one, James Alexander. Give it a try. It's a heavy subject, but an easy enjoyable and interesting read. It took place near my home which makes it far more interesting. Clara and Mr. Tiffany is a pretty fascinating ready, too. And not too heavy (but full of art references). Your new one sounds good. I love to be inspired by good books. I hope to write one one day!!
