page 135, The Man Who Loved Books Too Much by Allison Hoover Bartlett
since i knew i was going to the market at lunch today (i forgot that i had to deliver more solicitation letters), i thought i'd choose the word "market".
the larger photo is the northwest corner of the building. paddington's pump is a restaurant that serves the best peameal bacon sandwich. i should know, i used to go there many years ago when i was still a carnivore. i'd bring you all there one day. i promise.
the smaller pictures show the inside of the market; as you can see there's not a lot of shoppers at two in the afternoon (no, i wasn't goofing off, my lunch hour is from 1:00 to 2:15 :-)). on the second floor of the market, those brick windows you see at the back, there is a gallery where exhibits of portraits of old toronto, especially the vicinity around the market building, are displayed. there are also other restaurants on the second floor. the basement (not shown here) has fruit and vegetable stands and other specialty shops (for example, there is a rice store, where different varieties of rice you probably never heard of are sold). there are also fast-food style restaurants, the merchadise as diversed as toronto's population.
wow! 300 photos posted on this album so far. 65 more and i'll be ace. yeah!
@bkbinthecity - and you will have to let me know or i'd be really hurt :-( thank you.
@cscecil - i will bring you there, CS. for sure! thank you.
@pamfromcalgary - it is a wonderful experience to browse this market. on saturdays, the building across hosts a farmer's market and between this market and that farmer's market, your wallet's going to wear off! thank you, pam.
this market is bigger than our entire mall, which includes a jc penney. i am currently experiencing urban envy. i grew up outside Hartford, CT, could catch a bus and go shopping anytime I wished and i often did. many opportunities. huge stores, big malls, many bus transfers. then i moved. no buses. no malls. no stores even. i did get to go to wal-mart yesterday. . .big whoop.
Beautiful building, I love markets especially if they have food. Question: what on earth is a pea meal bacon sandwich? I want to check out that rice stall!
@catsmeowb - are you kidding me! i love wal-mart. and hey, porter airlines now fly to vermont! yippee-yay! i can come visit you. tee-hee! thank you, camille.
@danig - good question! a peameal bacon sandwich is a sandwich made of peameal bacon! yee-haw! seriously, peameal bacon is what is known in the U.S. as canadian bacon and elsewhere in the world as back bacon. they are not like the regular bacon that are merely strips of fat but rather consist of lean meat and almost always just a sliver of fat. they are cured like the regular bacon and they come in lumps (i don't know if that is the right word) kind of like a tenderloin shape and is covered with cornmeal (not really pea but corn). eh, why am i explaining this to you when we could've just googled the thing. i'll take a picture of the peameal bacon today, just for you, DG.
have you seen a purple rice? really deep purple it looks black when raw but dark purple when cooked. they have red rice and yellow rice, and green rice, and blue rice. i'm kidding about the blue :-P thanks, DG.
I need one of those sandwiches! And yes I could've googled it or gurgled it but I wanted you to tell me, now need photo ASAP am hungry. Deep purple eh? Good name for a band!
oh, that is exciting! i know i sound like i am complaining. sorry. i, too, love walmart. can find almost anything i need there for a price i can afford and it gets me out of the house, which i need to do more often- at least i am told.
@altadc - thanks, kiddo. chat was asking if you were coming to manila.
@jannkc - i know, 300 photographs and i can only count in my one hand's fingers the photos i think are quite good. ah, 65 more photos to practice with eh? thanks, jann.
@russianblue - kass, there are a lot of people living downtown who are not familiar with a lot of places around them, so you're not the only one. this photogaphy thing helps me to discover places that are walking distance from the office. just around victoria street, i love taking pictures of the old buildings' windows and doors.
@cscecil - i will bring you there, CS. for sure! thank you.
