i love music boxes and one day i will buy a large one that plays a complete chopin piece and i will put it in my dream library (see 'armchair' post from five days ago).
for now i only have two, both of which are jewelry boxes. a bigger one plays 'raindrops keep falling on my head' and this one which is smaller plays 'air' by bach. the bigger box has a shorter play time so i have to wind it a lot if i want to listen to it. this one plays when the lid is opened; most of the time when i want to listen, i just leave the lid ajar for continuous playing. i need to wind it still but it plays a lot longer than the bigger box.
my first music box was a small laquered powder box given to me by a special friend. it plays 'love story' and last time i visited the old country, my father showed it to me; it is still in mint condition. he likes it because 'love story' was my mother's favourite song.
Oh, I love music boxes too. I don't think about it much, but I do. The angel ceramic I posted at Christmas time...the angel my mom gave me as a girl...it spins and plays Silent Night. I had one of those little girly jewelry boxes when I was young with the ballerina that pops up and spins in front of a mirror when you open it. Forgot the tune though. I remember we'd all gone to the "city" to Christmas shop in Atlanta when I was very young. Somehow I knew she'd bought me that music box....I was so excited! It is funny how in this high tech age, a music box can still give so much joy! Lovely how you photographed yours from that angle and "ajar" for your challenge.
Cool box There is quite a collection in our house Jackie has a thing for wooden boxes... sadly none of them are musical, but then I'm not musical either and she keeps me around
@espyetta - thank you, MB. that music box with the ballerina, i've seen a few of those over the years and before i received my first music box, i dreamed of having something like that. i saw once on TV of a music box, that when you open the lid, a figurine of two skaters was on a mirror and it played the song "if" and i've been looking for that ever since.
@summerfield Oh wow. I never saw the figure skaters, but we did give my grandmother, when I was a kid, this little white jewelry box that was had drawers like a bureau....it had roses painted on it and the top section had no drawers...just a mirror on the back. And butterflies were stuck on there with magnets. When she wound it up, the moving parts behind moved magnets around, so the butterflies "flew" all over the mirror. She'd take in me in her room to watch it and try on jewelry. I am just now wondering what in the world she did with that? I would have loved to have had it, but some relatives would go through her house and just take what they wanted after she went to the nursing home at age 100.
@espyetta - wow! MB, you gotta find that butterfly music box. you're a person who treasures things for their intrinsic value, you should be the keeper of family heirlooms!
@sunnygreenwood - thank you so much, anne. i would really like to have that dream library come true. i probably would be too old to be riding on sliding ladders, but we never know!
Perfect for the word ... love music boxes. When you find a Chopin one let me know! He's my favorite. I want one with a beautiful tone. I had one (cheap!) that made the worst noise ... the cat would leave the room!
@karenann - hahaha! that's so funny i almost blew water on my laptop! :-O. you know, there was once an exhibit here in toronto of those large music boxes. i forgot what they call them when they are as large as a grand piano. and they make the most beautiful sound! the price: $50,000 was kind of mid-range. i almost died when i saw it but i bought a lottery ticket that night just in case i won and i'd buy the whole exhibit! hahaha. thank you, karenann.
This box looks beautiful! Great setup and composition. A very lovely shot! There is a Music Box Museum in Otaru, Hokkaido that you must visit if you're ever in that part of Japan. I was there a few years ago. They have so many gorgeous-looking, exquisitely handcrafted music boxes. I was ooh-ing and aah-ing at everything even though I don't collect music boxes.
@bkbinthecity - thank you, brian. then you must get melody a nice musical box for her birthday or christmas. just sayin'. :-)
@moonshadow - thank you, granddaughter of wynona. much appreciated.
@myautofocuslife - thank you, livia. i should make note of that for when i go back in january to visit the old country. that should be quite interesting.
Beautiful capture and composition. Love the black background, really brings out the wood tones on the music box. Lovely story too. Like how your dad kept it because it was your mother's favorite song.
wonderful shot -- and I love music boxes, too!! "raindrops" was a song I learned to play on the piano in high school -- makes me smile to think how many times I played that song!
@sunnygreenwood - thank you so much, anne. i would really like to have that dream library come true. i probably would be too old to be riding on sliding ladders, but we never know!
@catsmeowb - you spoil me, my friend! thank you so much!
