get pushed #9 - street shot by summerfield

get pushed #9 - street shot

abhijit @abhijit is my partner this week for the get pushed challenge. his push is as follows: "I would like you to take a Monochrome or B&W portrait of someone who wouldn't normally pose for you. Can be a street shot, someone at work or any other social setting."

i must say that that push is a lot more difficult than last week's in terms of finding the right photo opportunity. the snake, all i had to do was go to the zoo and shoot the damn snake. this time i get to ask to shoot people. it took me two hours of wandering around downtown toronto to find the courage to ask people if i can take their photograph. but when i saw the opportunity, i remembered robin williams' mantra in his movie "dead poets' society": carpe diem.

at the old city hall, these four men were taking turns photographing each other with their phones. so i offered to take their photos. i explained that i am learning to do photography and that i'd appreciate this learning opportunity. they agreed, but they wanted to have a good portion of the building as background.

the man on the right asked if i have a photo of niagara falls or toronto skyline. he said he would like to purchase either or both for his office. i hope he contacts me soon because i just happen to have the most incredible photo of niagara falls, n'est-ce pas?

thank you, ladies and gents, for your visits and comments; know that i appreciate and value them.

my same september post for today is here: http://365project.org/summerfield/365-again/2012-09-16

Sue
you did it! yay! wonderful and a possible sell in the future too =)
September 17th, 2012
Good for you getting this shot. I hope you will be able to sell him some of your photos as well

@roth - yay for the possible sell. there was a local 'arts fair' down here on the danforth this weekend. i went yesterday with my camera. whoa! i got stopped on my tracks, please no photographs. and this was from a photog/artist/painter/sculptor who was selling his stuff. wow! a print 10 x 15 or something, framed, of a scene similar to the camera settings challenge going on - intentional camera movement - was tagged at $275!

then there was another photographer who was work was very good, and he has photos of cherry beach, etc. he had a 8x10 photo of a broken window of starbucks during the G20 meeting two years ago and the tag was for $200. and while i was talking to him, a lady actually bought it! well the reason it was expensive he said was his photos are printed on fabric paper which is a lot more durable and superior than the paper the mainstream printers use. and he even told me where i can have my photos printed and framed. so if anyone wants to buy your photos, that's the price range.

thank you, sue.

I know how scary it is to approach complete strangers and ask to take their photo! I can only ever then manage to grab it on Auto and then back away hastily after thanking them! I do offer to email the photo to them though, makes it feel like a bit more of a two way thing! Well done you!
September 17th, 2012
Nice shot of them! I don't think I'll ever be brave enough to ask anyone if I can take their pic! I hope they get in touch about your Niagra pic!
September 17th, 2012
nice shot and to think, it is only monday and you already are getting your shot done! lucky you!!!!! i don't know what my challenge is as of yet.
September 17th, 2012

well done on the response.

looks even better large. love the detail in the building.
The idea was for you to approach strangers. I found it very hard initially. But now find it quite easy to approach people :-)

Fabulous! Love the comp, those arches really set it off. Brilliant and do let us know if he gets in touch

@salza - thank you, sally.
September 18th, 2012
@jackie8 - it is quite scary and a few months ago, i was actually rejected. i was told men are supposed to be easier to approach and they don't care whether their photos get posted online. thank you, jackie.

Congratulations on the about-to-be sale! lol I look at photographers who are selling their pictures all the time and think, "If I could just get a better camera, I could be doing this too!" I know I have shots that would sell, I just don't have a camera that can handle the high pixels you need for the printing. Someday... In the meantime, this is a good shot- they are quite pleased with themselves!
September 20th, 2012
cool pic, great story. hope he contacts you!
September 20th, 2012
@olivetreeann - thank you, ann. partner, being a former salesman himself, is quite excited at the prospect he's now scouting possible printers. i just shake my head. i think what i would do is if and when the person e-mails me, i would send him a 'copy' of a few possible photos with the 'summerfield' name across it just so he couldn't reproduce it. then i'll have it printed and framed when he actually buys it. what do you think?
September 20th, 2012
@sunnygreenwood - thank you, anne.
September 20th, 2012
@summerfield Sounds like a good plan- proofs, purchase, $$, product.
September 20th, 2012
Awesome street photography. Your detail and composition on this is incredible. Looks great in b&w. I've yet to get up the courage to photograph someone. Maybe in my next 365. Did he contact you? You took some amazing photos of Niagara Falls a while that I remember.
