Con Envy by taiwandaily

Con Envy

Living abroad isn't just about the things you miss from back when you were home, but it's also about missing new things as well. The easiest example being new technologies in america which i want to try out for myself, but aren't available here in Taiwan.

There are also changes in American culture which I feel a bit bad to be missing out on. One example is the new prevalence of "cons." It seems like nowadays there is a convention for anything and everything. I've been to a few business aimed conventions but never one based around a hobby of mine. Every time I hear about there being a new con that focuses on some small specific thing that I like, I feel a bit disappointed that I can't go and show my support.

Taiwan seems to have conventions all the time, but mostly they are for business. I have been to art, food service, bicycle, and computer conventions. However to my knowledge there is only one that is based purely on entertainment, that being one about Japanese comics. But still this one doesn't have the panels with artists and writers, which is to be expected of a hobby convention.

The picture above is of a sign which got me a bit excited. It seemed like it was for a Naruto (a specific japanese cartoon/comic) convention. This got me excited that in the future they would have more specific conventions aimed at fans of just one thing. However it was just a place to buy some rare items, it didn't have the author, or the people who make the cartoon, etc.

Meaning it will probably be many years before there is a hiking enthusiasts-con here in Taipei.
