Can't See the Wood for the Lichen

The lichen is all over the south facing trunk - and I mean ALL over.
The tree is on the pavement just outside the front gate.

The whole tree is covered - but it looks patchier on the north-facing trunk.
There's pretty much a blanket coverage on the south side.
There are a lot of trees along the road and most seem to have a lot of lichen but it doesn;t seem to do them any harm.
