Tonight we played with shooting smoke from an incense stick--way too fun! I'm anxious to spend some more time with this to try and catch more interesting patterns...
This is sooo cool! I tried last night too, mine's a total mess.
How did you do this? Does the external flash got something to do with the sharpness of the smoke?
@leesmethurst (and anyone else who's intereste!)
This was set up using a black backdrop, a stick of smoking incense (make sure you do this in a really well ventilated area--ugh!), an off-camera flash and an additional flashlight. We even had the overhead light in the garage on (we'll try again without to see if it makes a difference) Snoot the flashes, directed close to smoke. Just experiment with the manual settings (we used f/11, ISO 200, 1/200 give or take). We inversed and colorized in post. Here's a way cool sampling from someone far more experienced: http://sensitivelight.com/smoke2/?image=2
Have fun! :-)

Hi Jess: (See comment to leesmethurst above)
Here's a way cool sampling and basic instructions from someone far more adept at this than I at this point: http://sensitivelight.com/smoke2/?image=2

Actually, it sounds way worse that it actually is. Give it a shot--you may be surprised! :-D
