When I got to school today I parked next to the beautiful BMW convertible of our assistant school head. Unfortunately, the car was not as lovely as I remembered it. The left front panel and headlight had been noticeably battered and crumpled. I tracked down Laura to find out what had happened and she told me the sad story. Leaving school a few days ago to attend a meeting in Washington DC, she had only gotten half a mile down the road when a herd of deer burst out of the woods. Five of them crossed safely, but the last, a majestic buck, crashed directly into her car and was flung over the hood and roof coming down behind the car. When she got out of the car, it was evident the buck had died instantly. She dragged it to the side of the road and was able to return to school.
I feel like a photojournalist taking this shot, but I was touched by the hairs caught among the wreckage, all that remains of a noble beast.
