By now you all probably know about the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the East Coast of the United States this afternoon. The epicenter was 39 miles from Richmond in Mineral, VA. I was in a meeting at school, and it didn't take us long to figure out what had happened and go outside til we were sure there were no aftershocks. I tried calling my husband at home but all the circuits were busy so there was no service. When I got home,he told me his experience with the quake and then I surveyed the damage to our home. As you can see, we escaped pretty much unscathed.
Thought of you immediately today- so blessed now to know you're ok and only suffered a knocked over photo. Phew!! My neice who is close to DC is also unscathed. It was also pretty interesting to see how quickly someone from 365 started a discussion to see how everyone was. All we got was a thump in the attic from something falling over and a jiggling window prism. Nothing else. This is a perfect shot to remember the day by!
It was a bit of a surprise. My base is on the first of four floors at work, and I definitely felt the movement. Tables shook, and it was quite evident on the fourth floor. Definitely something we are not accustomed to here on the East Coast.
Sorry, I find humor in all the chit-chat about the quake. Although, having lived in Los Angeles, I do have a habit that annoys friends and family - I keep the toilet lids closed. Once you've picked things out of there after an earthquake, even though it's clean, it seems like a natural precaution to close the lid.
I hope there isn't another quake for you but if there is, you shouldn't run outside where all the power lines could fall on you. The safest place is actually in a door way.
I thought of you when I heard that it originated in VA. Glad to see the extent of your damage was quite limited. ;-) We felt it up here in NY (I didn't, but several co-workers did), and they evacuated us for a bit to be on the safe side.
Wonder will your insurance cover that damage!!!
