3 in 30

A very palatable way to get a taste of the museum’s collection. The title “3 in 30” refers to concentrating on 3 specific works of art in 30 minutes. Free, no ticket required. Just show up and be part of a group led by a knowledgeable docent. This particular tour was described thusly in the online calendar of events: “Explore assemblages and collages in the special exhibition, Cosmologies from the Tree of Life: Art from the African American South, and discover the artists inspiration for their work.”The first powerful assemblage was inspired by 9/11. The second was made from recovered steel from Alabama and evoked Jesse Owen. The last piece is a quilt created by a member of the Gee’s Bend collective and actually combined two traditional quilting patterns. This work was displayed in the Minimalist gallery as a way of showing these works are no longer considered Outsider art, but part of the everwidening world of mainstream art.
That must have been a fascinating series!

@eudora It was wonderful. I had actually seen the exhibit on my own a few weeks ago, but having the insights of the docent was a real pleasure.

@allie912 I'm intrigued by the idea of spending 30 minutes with 3 works rather than trying to see everything the museum has to offer. Since I don't have an art background, I'd like a docent tour, too.
