As part of our celebration of Children's Book Week, the Library sponsored "Read Me" Day. Teachers and students alike were encouraged to wear shirts with writing or any buttons or badges with slogans. To make it even more special, anyone wearing a readable shirt could also wear jeans. Since T-shirts and jeans are not usually permitted by our dress code, this is a real treat for the kids. In the picture to the left, you can see a class of second graders all participating in the celebration. The two adults photographed on the right are my colleague Susan in her amazing Apron of Buttons and Lanessa, Chair of Academic Services wearing a shirt saluting teachers.
During Book Week the Library has daily drawings for teachers, awarding gift cards to Barnes & Noble, pads of holiday post-it notes and book plates. We have daily challenge quizzes for classes to test their knowledge of children's books. And of course, all week in the Library we celebrate authors and books. I think I can safely say reading is alive and well at our school!
Thank you and your staff for keeping reading alive! It is so fundamental, and imaginative....so hard for me to think of the people who dont read, or have any desire to do so. Great photo!
So glad to hear that you're focusing on reading and the kids seem to enjoy it. Sometimes I think I'm just as guilty of the TV and computer distractions and seldom take the time to pick up a book ... unless I need a reference book of some sort.
Kids are so cool and love to be challenged. It is great that your school works with you and lets them wear jeans as a special treat. Some of the schools just refuse to be involved in fun learning activities like this. You are truly a gift to the kids at that school.
great idea! I would wear my t-shirt that has the braille alphabet on the back of the shirt. I'm glad the maker of the shirt thought to put it on the back instead of the front. ;)
