I was just leaving

I thought this was a cicada but having studied the pictures on Wikipedia, I'm not so sure. I encountered it on the sidewalk at school. I squatted down to confront him face to face and he immediately began to back up! It was all I could do to keep him on the sidewalk long enough to get a picture! He was about 4 inched long. Any insect experts out there?

@digitalrn @kimmistephens Thanks for the confirmation. The pictures online show great cellophane-like wings, and this bug doesn't seem to have any. Maybe he is in a molting stage and doesn't need wings yet.

I think a nymph. It should have little stubs where the wings will be once it's an adult.
