I thought this was a fungus at the base of the tree, but when I rapped on it, it was hard and unyielding. So although I don't know what it is, I found the play of tones and textures interesting.
Well, it sure is fascinating! Perhaps it's some kind of growth that died and turned hard. Great textures and contrast between it and the tree. Nice shot!
