Saw this very odd bird at a Straw's Bridge Local Nature Reserve, West Hallam, Derbyshire. I have checked the bird books and can not identify it. Totally black beak is very peculiar. Any ideas?
hmmm... i ran it thru iNaturalist and didn't get an immediate suggestion of what it might be... i wonder if it's a cormorant? but it's head doesn't look quite right... looks more like a swan, although i can't find any online with black beaks... i know someone who is a birder and he might be able to tell me what it is if i can get in touch with him...
@northy Thanks for this and I thought the same as you but the head is wrong as is the beak for a Cormorant (Cormorant beaks are not all black). My best guess is that it is some kind of hybrid but it is a puzzler.
