now I have to go back and look at my shots of this type of woodpecker. I thought they were downy but very subtle differences. they are quite friendly at our metro park. nice capture. especially like the talons holding it on the tree.
@jackies365 I was confused on the ID on these for quite awhile. Thought some of the Downy Woodpeckers seemed kind of large...:) but turns out they are Hairy Woodpeckers..the male has a spot of red on his head, the female has none.
I always go by the size on these- if it's bigger than a Chickadee, it's a Hairy!
