I regularly walk past the old GPO (on the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Streets) on my way to gym and swim.
It's a grand building. It was closed as a post office in 1992 and now houses various retail outlets. It was designed by A E Johnson who took second place in the 1858 design competition for a Melbourne GPO capable of handling the mail generated by rapidly growing population resulting from the 1850s gold rushes. The existing post office on the same site had been in operation since 1837, just two years after Melbourne was established in August 1835.
The location of the GPO is still used as the point of reference for measures of distances from the centre of Melbourne.
