Today we helped Joey move from the nice safe pretty college town where he went to school to Philadelphia. He felt there would be better job opportunities and a friend of his had an opening in his apartment, so it seemed to be the time to make the move. I on the other hand, was freaking out (to myself) about the sketchy neighborhood and the amount of loose trash everywhere. I was feeling no love for the City of Brotherly Love. I thought I would have a chance to take a better photo but I was too busy trying to help navigate us through the city and dealing with the emotional turmoil going on in the pit of my stomach.
As a mother, I can so much understand and empathise with everything you say. At least you are there to help him with the moves - and you will be there to help him again if this doesn't work out
Ditto what Desi said. He has a ready made support network with his friend there so that is good. But I remember my fear when Sean moved to Nottingham and I found out it was known as "Shottingham"!! He was perfectly safe and had a wonderful time there. Also - great photo! Love your composition, the signs, and b&w is perfect.
@seacreature thanks Desii. I guess it's one of the hard parts of being a parent. Luckily, the lease is for only six months. So after that he is hoping to get into another place with some of his buddies that live there. And hopefully in a much much nicer neighborhood.
@narayani Thank you very much for your comments about the photo! "Shottingham"! That must have given you a few gray hairs. The upside is that the Police station is only a half a block away so… There's that.
I've felt that way when my son has lived in apartments in sketchy areas - in Busan (South Korea) and in San Francisco - but he loves being in big cities. Might as well experience it while he's young!
