there was a railroad that ran through Edmonton. This trestle bridge was built by the Edmonton Yukon & Pacific Railroad. It became known as the shortest railroad with the longest name. Just by it's name you can see how far the owners intended for it to travel. However, the farthest itmade it was across the river to the north side of the city.
It only operated as a passenger service until 1928. It continued hauling coal and frieght until 1954.There are four trestle bridges still standing that they built. Today the Mill Creek Ravine Trail system runs through here and the city has incorporated the bridges as part of the bike and walking trails.
It was the first time I walked through this area and it was a very nice and relaxing walk enjoying sights that were completely new to me
Reminds me of the Kettle Valley Railway trestle. Love your vintage processing for this, looks like an shot from one of my Grandpa's old gold mining books:)
@bkbinthecity no, I think it's just used for a hiking area now. My brother goes on 3 day hikes in the mountains there. He's got some amazing shot from there!
@pwallis Hey Paula, I just looked it up and apparently there is one section at Summerland that does have a 1912 engine that runs on there puling two passenger coaches and three open cars
@bkbinthecity oh yeah!!! - I even totally knew that (and forgot) because I actually took some shots of it when we were doing the wine tours in Summerland this summer and the "wine train" went by. I should post a shot of that for you!
