We visited Rievaulx terrace today, it's a beautiful 18th century wooded lawned picnic area just above Rievaulx Abbey with a very grand Ionic Temple at one end of the lawned area and a smaller Tuscan Temple at the other end. The larger temple was a single garden room with painted ceilings and ornate plaster work which was beautiful. Apparently it used to have a working kitchen beneath the room where very grand meals were prepared. The last time it was used was in the 60s when the Duke of Kent had his stag night there!. Basically it was built to show how rich the family was.........
Thank you all for your comments and favs, it's all very welcome.
Great clarity and details, Margaret. Interesting info too, thank you. @snaphappi Maggie, I'm almost sure that's Phoebus/Apollo the Greek, Roman god of the sun who is supposed to have ridden his chariot across the sky each day. I think the female figure preceeding him may be Aurora, goddess of the dawn.
