as far as the eye can see

this is taken from a lookout in the country surrounding Broken Hill. The town itself is approximately 1100km from the East coast of Australia and 500km from Adelaide in the south where I live. I have attached a link in case you would like to know more about this mining town.

That must be every bit as desolate at it appears! However, looking at the article, the town looks to be of a fair size. Having spent my teen years living in the Arizona desert town of Tucson, the town almost looks appealing to me!
