July 16: Glass Blocks

One of the local factories makes glass insulation. They make glass blocks as a byproduct. The glass blocks are used in windows and in room dividers. Since they are locally available, they are commonly used in building construction. I saw these glass block windows today in an old lumber company building. I don't know how old the building is. The building is slated to be torn down and new duplex or apartment buildings will be built on the lot. I do not like to see old buildings be town down. However, this case is a little bit dffierent. The lumber company was a relatively small one. It could not expand due to other buildings around it. The building needed repairs. The lumber company was not able to compete with the bigger lumber companies in the city. It was time to close it and move on.
A great study in lines and shapes. Great for b&w.

I really enjoyed your commentary as it is so relevant in towns everywhere today. I also like the brick and glass brick of your photo: Glass brick is an excellent architectural detail!

Too bad they can't refurbish it. I think some folks would like to have those glass blocks as windows. They do bring light into a room but it's a lovely soft and diffused light. Nice composition here- very well balanced.
