I have struggled with this week's mundane "cardboard" challenge, and honestly, I saw the amazing work done by many others on 365 and thought I better start thinking "abstract" on this one--and I may be stretching the confines of the theme, but I reviewed the word "cardboard" and then thought, well, I'm a wordsmith of sorts--why not play on the words some before I take my camera in hand!
When I was a young girl, my older brothers and I would visit my grandparents on Hilton Head Island, SC. We'd spend our days out on a dock casting shrimp nets, fishing, and crabbing. We'd come in for lunch and use my grandfather's binoculars to search for multi-colored painted buntings in the trees. I have very fond memories of these days--we were rarely "bored."
When rains came in the afternoons and forced us inside, we turned to the card table, and fished one of the many beautiful card sets my grandfather had collected over the years to play rummy, gin, war (oh, countless games of war), and hearts.
When my grandmother died at the age of 103 a few years ago, my mother and I discovered, once again, the card sets (left unused for many years, really), and I decided to divide the many sets among my brothers and I in hopes that our children could take up these sets in play when they too experienced the boredom of a rainy afternoons. Fond remembrances for generations to come.
Turns out I've missed the deadline on this challenge--oh well, it was a great thing to consider in the end!
@judis This is what happens when a husband goes out of town til the end of the month to help his dad who had emergency eye surgery and when I'm also the victim of a hit and run accident--time just gets in the way--I thought I had until the 28th (where did I get that?)! Thanks for commenting and giving me a vote of confidence. It's been a tough week. Oddly enough, 365 is my one real joy these days!
@shunter Thanks mom! I loved that I could bring up a fond memory associated with granddad and grandmom. One of the decks is still in its original casing. The b&w just seemed fitting for the era of the cards.
I think you did really well here, I wouldn't know where to start with the mundane challenges! Such a shame you missed the deadline. Love the composition and the processing.
@danitech Thanks so much for the comment! Mundane challenges are fun but complicated for me (and I'm no expert, so I just do it for the personal challenge).
@darylo Hit and run? I hope only vehicles were harmed. It does sound like a rough week. Yes 365 is a bright spot in my life too and it's people like you that make it so.
@judis Just vehicles yes! A pain, but I'm thankful it was not serious. I have really loved 365 and meeting such wonderful people--you're awesome! :) Oh, and thanks for the sooc explanation--I could NOT figure that one out on my own! Unfortunately, I don't know much about how to edit, so mine are mostly sooc except for cropping sometimes! I've got photoshop, so I'm actually trying to learn how to mess with the photos! I am almost two full months in--I love this site!
Thanks Daryl and right back at you. As to photoshop I've found that you tube is my friend for learning how to use it as is The Missing Manual (google it for your PS version) and don't forget @steampowered he is a fountain of information imparted with wit and charm.
Perhaps a missed deadline, but I find that trying out various challenges pushes my photography into areas I wouldn't have even thought about, and your post also celebrates your grandmother's life and a favorite memory at the same time you practiced your art!
