Still-Life by darylo

Still-Life

My get-pushed challenge is a still life made from 5 things in 5 different rooms. Yesterday, everything was from downstairs; today, it's upstairs. One for each person in the house and one glass plate to hold them.

Items: Kira's Room: Iron Chef prize hat (Japanese); Husband's item (from our room): Rubic's Cube; Aidan's Room: le tour Eiffel keychain; My office: my Japanese sandals I wore when I visited Tokyo at age 10; glass plate (whoops, that was from downstairs in dining room--where I'm taking all my shots).

In a rush these days. Last week of the term I'm teaching. I appreciate all of the comments and support--I will not be commenting much I'm afraid as grading will consume my life for the next week.

Thinking of doing a diptych of this real quick. If I do, here it is: http://365project.org/darylo/album3/2013-12-10
Very good snapshot of life shot.

The lighting and golden tones are gorgeous -- they convey warm memories to me.
Tonight after class I'm planning to set up a water shot! I'm so excited but it does look like it creates a total mess!

@taffy water shot is on my list so can't wait to see what you do.

Great shot. I looked back at your photos and I have to tell you I really loved the Dam Silk photo. I am new so need to learn all of this yet. Right now still on auto. Can you suggest a good site to learn about settings and what they mean? I do not have a book with my Lumix DMC FZ30. I bought it used to learn on. Thanks for any help you can give after you get done grading.

Lovely collection Daryl, wonderful lighting.

@miata2u Peggy, I have got a Lumix DMC FZ100 and think it is a cracking camera. I have not used it much on this project as I have mostly used my newer Sony. If it is just to explain what the controls and dials on your camera do, if you Google your camera you will find a manual as a PDF download explaining your camera, have a read of this and then just have a play around on it. Try taking the same shot of something with the camera at various different settings to see what effect they have. There are loads of different sites to explain the settings but I can't recommend one of the top of my head.

Such a neat way of representing you all - separate but together!

Hi Peggy! @miata2u Thanks to @markp Mark, he has a good idea about getting your manual online! As far as learning the settings, well, I used Auto for a couple of months to get used to the camera and then I started joining the Camera Settings Challenge on 365. It's not the easiest thing to do, but you can do a search for old ones and use some of them for learning all those buttons on the camera. You will want to consult some online sources (or books) about the "triangle:" aperture, ISO, and shutterspeed. I've been at it for 12 months now, so I actually get it now, but at the beginning, I had no idea what each really did. I'd like to also suggest you follow @archaeofrog Katie who is in the comments here. She has a wonderful blog for those wanting to learn photography. Take it one day at a time (there is a year to get it all in), and just have fun. I can't believe how much I've learned since Jan. 1. I don't have a specific reference for you, but start searching those old Camera Settings Challenges! Hope this helps! And always ask questions -- I have asked a million!

What an interesting challenge and an excellent response to it. Love how the whole family is represented here.

I like the use of yellow and golden tones throughout most of the image. Even the left face of the cube reflects yellow.

Love all the bright colours and the composition too. Good luck with the gradings.

A quick trip around the world :) Nice choice of items.

Perfect composition and such complementing colors. I have that same key chain of the Eiffel Tower. It's odd because just today I was wondering how I could use it in a photo! Great shot!
