I went in search of "my" hawks yesterday (and today, just posting now). Today, I was not aware I was within a few feet of one of them but when we locked eyes, he took off, so no shot today, but yesterday, similar situation. This one was on the ground taking in some of his prey, but he heard me get too close (I didn't even know I was in his range--just investigating a small noise--most likely his prey) and he took off for the trees.
