In Bali, everyone, including the chickens and roosters, eats rice. And everyone, including the chickens and roosters, uses a coconut for just about anything. In this photo, the chicken's rice is served in an empty coconut shell.
This hard shell has other uses, most notably as firewood for fresh seafood at restaurants. Where we might use hickory to flavor food, the Balinese use the coconut! There were young coconuts everywhere also for serving on table for all the juice inside. I tried one--but it's not my favorite flavor.
I remember wondering why I kept seeing coconut carcasses everywhere -- clearly they were being collected for different purposes. As firewood seems like the main reason! Or, as in this case, as serving bowls.
It is lovely the way they use natural things like coconut shells for so many uses, and the lack of materialism. I like the chicken eating the rice -we feed our chickens rice too.
