In the ancient village of Penglipuran this couple was about to officially announce their engagement (they had their own photography entourage). I could not help but meet them and ask if I might take their photograph for a memory of their stunning beauty! Oh, and it's not very evident in this photograph, but if you look closely, the man's teeth are sharp, which is done in a specific "teeth filing" ceremony beforehand. Very Balinese. So is his personal knife and her headdress (small in comparison to the final wedding headdress).
Also, note that she is not exactly looking directly at me. Traditional Balinese stances for women are looking sideways not directly--the elaborate makeup makes it even more dramatic--especially when viewing a dancing ceremony (very cool).
My next photo will show them from head to toe in all the regalia! It was very hot, so we moved to shade for the second shot.
