Corner of West Cedar and Mount Vernon Streets, Beacon Hill
From my walk yesterday.
Beacon Hill is one of Boston's most historic, distinctive neighborhoods, composed mostly of Federal period brick buildings like this one. The famous gas lamps are still in use.
The brick sidewalks were saved from destruction in 1947, when the women of Beacon Hill sat down on them to prevent city workers from hauling away the bricks. The city had been going to pave the sidewalks with concrete, but the women prevailed.
Today of course this is one of the most desirable, highest priced neighborhoods in Boston.
