Almost every year, I've noticed, New Year's Day is sunny, bright, and crisp. In the late afternoon I walked around the Pond and watched the pale winter sun go down behind the hill and then show through the trees and leave a trail on the water.
Back home, we had a nice candlelit dinner together, and in the evening I wrote down my goals for the year. Last night I looked at the goals I had written in January 2015 and found that I had done quite well with them. I didn't achieve everything, but I made progress on most fronts. So it seemed worthwhile to set down goals again to direct my efforts this year.
I've never been more afraid of the future than I am now, in regard to the nation and the world, but for my own life I am optimistic as ever.
