Sorry if this discussion has taken place, but the search facility doesn't seem to work! ! Has anyone any advice on using these? Are they good? Thinking of asking for one for my up & coming birthday. ;-)

Boo
@denidouble I have one which I use for my go everywhere camara. I find it very useful, expecially on ferries, out in the forest, in a park, in the city..for llampposts, wing mirrors..I love mine.

I have seen them in stores, but they have never grabbed my attention enough to investigate them.

I have one and used it all around the world in loads of different places. I use the large one but never tried it with a lense the size they say it can manage.

@denidouble I can't tell from the EXIF what camera you're using. I would say the Gorrilapod is find for Point and Shoot or bridge cameras. I'd be very concerned trusting one for a DSLR, however. At some point, weight is going to be an issue, and I'd rather not find out what the breaking point is when my camera hits the ground!

I have a gorillapod for 2.5kg holding a Nikon D200 with Nikkor 18-200. Soon I found out that the ballhead is absolutely needed. Holding the weight is no problem. For the rest it needs time to get used to the gorillapod and finding ways of securely fastening the thing. It means that you use two arms to sling around a pole and using the third one for preventing it from sliding down. The same applies when using it as a standing tripod: bend the ends in curves. I once put a Nikon D70 on the gorillapod used as a straight-legged tripod and it fell 2m. A small wonder: only the sun hood shattered, everything else was OK, I'm still using the camera. When getting the hang of bending the legs it works fine. Nevertheless I've switched back to a normal tripod, the reason being that I cannot always find objects to attach the gorillapod to. But I'm considering going back to the gorillapod because it is so easy in traveling by air, even though security always want you to unpack it.

They make a specific one for DSLR cameras. If you read my recent blog post about tripods, I have links at the end to the gorilla pod I use with my DSLR. http://www.archaeofrog.com/2013/04/maximize-your-tripod.html

I also use it in shots like this, where it was wrapped around the merry-go-round with my DSLR on it.

My main issue is that it is hard to keep the horizon straight, but you can fix that in post-processing. It is also small, so I often use it on top of things. But the low angle can provide for unusual shots too.

Yes.

Used within their intended spec, yes they're fab. I use one with both my X100 & my 7D.
Make sure you get one that can take the weight of your camera, and has a ball head.

Agreeing with Humphrey Hippo @humphreyhippo here. I just got the DSLR one, but without the ball head (it wasn't available in the store where I bought the pod). Used the thing once and realized I need to get the ball head asap. But I think I'm going to enjoy using it (with my Canon 600D) as a nifty travel tripod.

I have one for my P&S and really like it! I carry it around with me in my purse when I'm on the go!

bought one and never used it, but I bought a copy of a real one from Hong Kong for £8 including postage so no real loss.

i have one, and yes - it is great... BUT i find it frustrating and fiddly to use... that's totally my lack of patience with that kind of thing... when i put effort into using it properly, it works perfectly, it's light, steady, flexible (;p) and reliable...

YES, get it!!! Took this photo with my camera attached to my gorillapod wrapped around a lamp post!
