I am a novice photographer.. maybe even less than a novice since I only picked up my iphone to start snapping a few months ago.. I started 365 for many reasons (to share, learn, enjoy others wonderful work, inspiration, etc)..that being said, I am lost on what some of the abbreviations the seasoned people here use.
For example, what does "POV" mean, and "HDR", etc. etc.. I know this is some photography lingo, but I am lost...
Can anyone define these and others I see around here @ 365?
Thank you muchly (I promise I'll write them down and won't ask again :-)
That threw me a bit too at the beginning so I'll do the ones I can think of
POV - Point of View
HDR - High dynamic range
SOOC - Straight out of camera (ie not edited)
PP - popular page
i read a fantastic guide again today that has general info on it - it's under discussions - general getting started guide for new users, it's at page 3 at the moment but I found it answered loads of questions I had :)
@elliotwb thank you so much.. i really do appreciate this..definitely need to educate myself.. come from a world of writing & publishing so this is all new.. thank you again! @mmartin -everyone loves a comedian..:-)
@peterdegraaff Ha! I made up ETSOOI! :0) I am such a proud mama of that one! But, Katy @grammyn helped it spread by doing some ETSOOI challenges for a while. That really made it take hold. I still rely on ETSOOI quite often! Especially in the winter months!
@jase_h@mizhayz I think Jase is referring to an SNL skit (at least, that is where I first saw this) where they sold sofas..from a store called "Sofa King." But if they said it fast in the commercial, it was more like "So....f_ _ king" :0) We still quote that skit. It was Sofa King funny!
@peterdegraaff@pocketmouse@espyetta@plumtree500 >well now that I have a start on the lingo , (I'll be using ltep & ETSOOI alot me thinks :-) I don't feel so lost.. I really do appreciate everyone's input..
"ETTL" Expose to the left. Underexpose, since you move the compensation slider left.
"ETTR" Expose to the right. Overexpose
"ICM" Intentional Camera Movement. To get those "swooshy" effects.
"Pano" Panorama, especially those stitched together from multiple shots by editing software.
"Street" Street Shooting, candid shots in public places, typically of peope you don't know.
I was as lost as you a few months ago. Usually a quick "google search" will get you the answer for new ones, if they are not made up on the spot. Love ETSOOI!

@jase_h .i think i'm missing something ..
Welcome to 365. it can be a little daunting at first, but the more you put in, the more you get out.
@shadesofgrey has written a reallygood "Getting Started" guide (which is here: http://365project.org/discuss/general/9968/getting-started-guide-for-new-users#post-reply). Its definitely worth the read - especially the little tips of getting the most out of YOUR 365.
In the mean time, here is an acronym decoder, taken directly from the article:
SOOC- Straight Out Of Camera
SELFIE: Self portrait
NIFTY FIFTY: 50mm prime lens
PP: Popular Page
Fav, Fav'd, Faves (plural): Favorite, as in "I totally had to fav this photo"
B&W: Black and White
DOF: Depth of field
POV: Point of View
Comp: Composition
Here is a link to almost all the
photography related acronyms you could ever wonder about:
@mmartin -everyone loves a comedian..:-)
ETSOOI = edit the shit out of it
Surprisingly you will find that many of the acronyms used on 365 can be found on the web, and even Wikipedia with excellent explanations
MWUAHAHA = evil laughter
