I'm planning on some traveling - by air - and looking for thoughts on what others find to be the most useful lens to carry when hiking. I'm a Canon user - MAY look at a newer Canon before fall. When driving I just pitch everything I own in the car - can't do that when flying. What do others find most useful? And any thoughts on the Pelican Air Bags - worth it?
I would think that what you take is dependent on where you are going and what you intend to do while there. I saw a YouTube by the the National Parks by Night ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL2cKbxL-5I ), one of the parts is planning you trip, scouting (at 36 mins). Might be worth looking at least for ideas of what you are going to see and do. Happy Travels.
The lens I bought to take to Chicago last year was the Canon 24-105mm with IS. Much lighter than my other wide angle lenses. Lovely quality images I think. Mind you I have the Canon Mark 5D mark 11 which a very heavy camera without a lens!!
I agree with @byrdlip ... really depends on what you think you’ll be shooting... you’ll want reasonably wide for landscapes... and possibly a zoom for wildlife while hiking.... i now only carry my micro 4/3 when out and about, but when travelling with my cropped sensor canon my go to lens was the 16-85
Hi Melanie...a few thoughts. When I went to Ireland I brought a few different lenses but in the future would only bring my wide angle as that is what I used 99% of the time. I do quite a bit of hiking (but not after plane travel) and I bring my 50 mm only because Im afraid I might destroy it when hiking and its my cheapest lens. Just my thoughts.
Hi Milanie, on my recent trip to Florida, I just brought my canon sx60, it is light and has a great zoom and perfect for lugging around on hikes.
Enjoy your holiday!
@radiogirl That's what I use daily and love it - suppose I could get away with just that?? Your pictures from Florida sure looked great. I have the T3i and its kit wide angle (don't use the longer zoom) and a 50mm. Messed up with my airline reservations and am scared to have to check the cameras.
Thank you all so much for the many ideas - they have given me some really good things to think about - glad I started early on these things. Got a lot written down to look into!
@milaniet I always bring my camera in my carry on actually my purse was so big my camera fit in it..............never put anything valuable in your checked luggage. On our way home Air Canada lost my checked luggage and I just received it today! There was a snow storm in Toronto and a lot of flights were cancelled, we went on one flight and our luggage got stuck on another...........we were up for 24 hours.......oh such fun travelling! But I sure don't regret a week away with warm weather!
Hope your trip is fun and worry free :)
