I spotted Santa in the window of our local camera shop yesterday and have been intrigued to hear what photography-related items people have been wishing for for Christmas (everything from more time to fancy lenses). What are you wishing for - either realistically or if Santa wins the lottery?? Any suggestions for must have items? Personally I'm excited about ordering a Blurb book of this year's 365 pictures in the new year ... everything else requires a jackpot!
omg... just photo stuff... let me see... canon powershot g12, sigma 10 -20 mm, tramron 60 mm macro, canon ef 70 - 300 mm usm, and some small things like things to clean the camera, some reflectors, and so on...
Would really like a Cannon EOS 550 or 600D but will settle for a small tripod ! Would be interested to hear about your Blurb book when you have done it Judith !!
@judithg Another subject but can you tell me how to post replies properly Judith? I am the only one where in the blue writing in the right hand corner it doesn't say my name..I must be very stupid as everyone else can manage to do it !!!!
@judithg Yes but I only get the words (edit. delete reply) whereas every one else has (reply @ name) My reply still comes up but there is no answering address.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed to ask for big stuff yet, so I started with some basics:
gloves I can use with the camera (coz it's bloomin' freezing...) and a camera backpack! Big tripod is next...but it is my birthday in April, so may ask for it then :-)
A photography assistant to carry all my gear, set up and pack away everything when I'm done :-)
I will be treating myself to either a Canon G12 or S100 to replace my 'misplaced camera'
Oh I really want a 55-200mm lens and i've mentioned it several times to my family but I don't think it's on *their* list of things to buy me... maybe next year. And a macro lens wouldn't be too bad either...
Nikkor f1.8 50mm and pretty much everything on here. Santa sent me a letter saying he will have to wait to get the stuff to me till later on in the year!
OK...I've got this list hanging on a bulletin board over my desk. At first i was utterly depressed cause it was a constant reminder of what I didn't have. But over the last two years almost three I've been able to cross a few things off the list. While at the same time adding to the bottom. Yeah...still a bit depressing.
But I think by sharing my Ultimate Christmas Wish List it might give you all an idea or two or ten about the kinds of gear you may want. So...here is my wish list...and I better get one or two of these from people this year!
My Ultimate Christmas Wish List I better get some of these
I've just ordered myself a tripod (finally), a Manfrotto 190XPROB which came recommended on a couple of threads here. Also a bag to carry it. I wanted a remote but they didn't have any in stock :( I also want a macro lens and an upgraded camera body but they will have to wait. That's all (that I can think of right now!)
a DSLR preferably a Nikon or Canon. Some lenses to add would be nice. A new computer and/or laptop would be wonderful (my computer is over 10 years old and my laptop is not my friend anymore). But, I doubt I will get any of these items any time soon.
@hown I have red hair and I definitely have a shape, but probably not quite what you had in mind... also, I'm well out of the age range and my husband might not want me to relocate! :)
Wide Angle Lens, tripod, tripod head, soft box light tent, and light. So far I was Santa on the wide angle, and I got the tripod and head for family Christmas. So
Santa was very very good.
hmmm, a monopod, a macro lens, a bigger telephoto lens, & I might as well add a reflector and a few sandbags, and is there such a thing as a functional camera bag? Sometimes I just put my camera in my purse. (did I just tell you guys that? yikes). But I really need some new clothes. How boring....
I already treated myself to a 50mm/1,8f lens, which I looooove and a Manfrotto tripod (the 785b) - both of which I can recommend highly and both of which don't cost the world.
If Santa won the lottery I wouldn't mind him buying me a macro lens, a speedlite, a reflector and a few other goodies :).
Ohhh, I'd love to see your book @judithg !!! Please make a picture of it and post it. Can I order one with your pictures, too :)?
*replacement battery charger for the one I left in LA last month. Doh!!
* two new spare Nikon batteries
* A 55-200mm short telephoto lens for portraits
* remote shutter release that also operates off-camera flash
* off camera flash (Speedlite)
* 2 softboxes and stands
* Photoshop
* oh, and a new car, which I'm getting next Wednesday!
I feel like I already got what was on my Christmas list...to quit my job and be a professional wedding photographer and wedding video editor!
I'd say anything more...just some more time with my little man. :) I've been too busy with the first Christmas gift lately :D
mainly i just really want harry potter lego years 5-7 for the xbox.....a kindle....
then a whole bunch of random camera gear....speed light, new lens, epiphanie bag....fisheye optic for lensbaby....and whatever other random camera stuff anyone wants to get me :)
I wanted a Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens which happily my hubby has told me I can go & buy next week ready for Chrissie as well as a remote for the Speedlite flash I've got so except for winning the Lotto & getting a Canon 1DX like Jaydee, I'm extremely happy as I'm all fixed :)
@tabbycat So...I just saw your wish list...and you know me I've got suggestions.
What kind of camera do you shoot with? I cant remember...but there may be a better replacement than new batteries.
If you want a remote shutter release that will also fire off-camera strobes, you need to get Pocket Wizard. I have six of them. With Pocket Wizard, you would need a Pre-Release Trigger Cable and then with two remotes for firing the camera, one remote on the camera itself, and then one on each strobe you can fire the camera remotely and strobes remotely at the same time.
When you get your softboxes, look for the strobe kits that include a softbox, gels, barndoors, snoot, and grates. They are highly useful. I haven't found them online but instead in my local camera shop (250 miles away haha). They are awesome!
@jasonbarnette - no but I will now. Funny when you mentioned your list you made comment that others may use it as a reference. I was like nah - then so wide angle and was damn he's right!
@judithg Ha! Yeah, photography, like SCUBA, is just a gigantic black hole of need! There's ALWAYS something new to get! Oh! I also want a Danbo! I forgot about him...(sorry Danbo!)
@jasonbarnette I have a Nikon D3100 which has no sensor, so I need a hotshoe sensor for the remote. I've been looking at the Giga T Pro ($140 from local camera shop) which will fire shutter, flash and even do time lapse. Maybe could get that cheaper online? I def. want wireless NOT cable for this!
Am open to battery suggestions. Am currently using a borrowed multi charger from a kind soul at camera club...have you ever bought from www.linkdelight.com ?
@laynesgram@missvicki- ha ha - I wondered why someone had faved a pic of mine from yonks ago - thanks for resurrecting!
I can' decide what I want to wheedle Santa for! I've got a 3.5 year-old Canon EOS 400D (which also fell out onto the motorway during a crash 2 years ago) - and since getting my compact system Sony NEX in the summer - I've been using that on manual all the time, and now I'm wondering whether to upgrade my proper DSLR - should I just trade it in and get another entry-level one or go one step up? Can't decide ...
I'm getting a Blurb book made too but I don't finish my year til mid Feb so Santa will have to come back when things are quieter for him :)
I would like a DSLR but since I have no idea which one that might be something for another Christmas.
Merry Christmas Everybody!!!!!
I've already bought myself some things on my wish list, Photoshop CS5, remote shutter release, and reverse macro adapters. Things still on the list - back-up hard drive, macro lens, new tripod with a ball head, and a speed light. Oh, yeah, and a Kindle Touch :)
Macro lens please. Mmmm don't think it's gonna happen :( our two cars just been in the garage......£1,000 later. :(.............. I have been VERY good this year though!!
I didn't know what a Blurb Book was so I googled it and it does sound very interesting. I'll have to think about maybe doing that. My year is not up until the middle of January.
@tabbycat OK..here is the deal. First of all, I only saw Olympus and Sony listed under the remote shutter release section. Are you sure they sell that for Nikon?
Even if they do, it is just a remote and a trigger for the camera. This particular setup will not fire a strobe remotely.
For $200 you can get a used pair of Pocket Wizard remotes. With a pair and the additional pre-trigger release cable you can trigger your camera remotely and then also operate one strobe off-camera.
I have an intervalometer I picked up for $75 that will control my camera for time-lapse and long-exposure photography while shooting stars, just in case you would be interested in that.
You can find cheaper remotes online, but remember you get what you pay for in the world of electronics. The cheaper, the shorter the range, the less likely it fires 100% of the time, and the less rugged. I've had my Pocket Wizards for three years with no problems. Well...except for when two were stolen at a train station in the UK.
For batteries, I would suggest you first of all only ever buy Nikon. I have bought several brands of third-party knock-offs and they just don't last very long. Look into buying a battery grip for your camera. Get the Nikon brand for this, too. Sure it costs more but it will save you in the end when it never, ever breaks. Then you can place two batteries at a time in the camera to give yourself more power that lasts longer.
Morning all! My son suggested that he and my daughter could get me 'ace' membership for Christmas which I am really excited about!! They can see that at last I have found a way to slot a hobby into my manic life. Christie pointed out that Picnik membership is very reasonable so I might go for that as a little treat. Of course if my numbers come up a little campervan could appear on the drive so we can have lots of adventures together....otherwise a cosy Christmas with no squabbling or mess would be a wish come true,,!!
My wishlist: Zuiko Olympus micro four third lenses: 9-18mm, 75-300mm and 17mm pancake lens. Holga ultimate kit or Diana lo-fi lens. Some plug-ins for aperture.
My travel wishlist: hiking in Annapurna region of Nepal, climb Kilimanjaro, and Torres del Paine National park.
A dark-haired female model for an anime-styled shoot I need to do! Any Kate Beckinsale / Ashley Greene look-a-likes out there, call me. No, really! Haha!
For the first time, I don't really want any camera gear.
@smevvy woo me too.. Photoshop. The EXPENSIVE version. But I would also like a new laptop for pictures ONLY. @jinximages I'm a dark haired female and I'm cute, too.
@livvy14 i have a nikon d5000 and it is the best camera! one of my cousins is doing a photography course at uni and her teacher recommends these cameras they are so good :) love them good choice :)
I want a ND400 filter, polarizing filter, tripod. This is my realistic wish list. And on my dream list I want a Fuji X100. Oh well, it's good to dream at this time of year ;-)
dear Santa, i really want a dslr camera, it even doesn't have to be a big really expensive one, or you can get me a wining lottery ticket so i can buy it myself ;D
That's about all Santa can afford.
Since Santa knows where all the naughty girls live, I was hoping he'd give me one this year.
gloves I can use with the camera (coz it's bloomin' freezing...) and a camera backpack! Big tripod is next...but it is my birthday in April, so may ask for it then :-)
