RAWCOMP 21

May 15th, 2014
A massive thanks to all that contributed, voted and entered Rawcomp 20.

Additional thanks to all those individuals who took the time to vote for my entry, the support is much appreciated

For those of you who are new to RAWCOMP, the concept is pretty simple. The last winner becomes the host and posts a link to a RAW photo in dng format. Contestants download the image and edit using RAW editor only. The resulting file is then saved as a jpeg, submitted and tagged RAWCOMP21. The host then adjudicates on the edits and presents a selection for voting.

Last time I set this challenge it was on behalf of another winner who was unable to set the subsequent challenge. I am not sure the image I chose was welcomed by all (ooh err). So this time have gone for different type of image. A very busy street scene in Vancouver from September 2012

Here is the link to the .DNG file:

RAWCOMP21

The rules are:

"All editing must be done with a RAW processor , using no other software or plugins" - so either Lightroom, Adobe Camera RAW, the RAW processing software that came with your camera, but nothing else that does more than RAW processing - no NIK plugins, no compositions, no other editing other than RAW processing. This differentiates it from WWYD, where any editing goes. Cropping the photo is allowed but must be done within the RAW processor."

All entries must be submitted by midnight (BST) on May 22nd and the finalists should be announced around May 26th after a period for voting.

Here is a preview of the starting point, posted as a jpeg on my 365 page.

-The photo you edit must be uploaded into one of your albums to count for entry.
-To be considered you MUST TAG your PHOTO “RAWCOMP21” in the tag section when you upload it.
-Remember that posting your photo in this discussion is OPTIONAL. ;-)
-To load your image into this discussion thread, go to your photo, copy the "share" code found under your image, and paste it here.
-Multiple entries are fine.

- if you have any questions about any parts of the process, just ask away in this thread ! :)))

Good Luck with those sliders.

So can we mess with "grain" in the photo. I'm using Lightroom 5
May 16th, 2014
@tomservo yes as Lightroom is a RAW editor you can use any functionality within it.

Cool, thank you

I can use something called Photobox as it came with the camera, but wouldn't know if it was RAW as I don't know the acronym. Help please

@ceilidh Margaret, Good Question, after I thought a little, do I know the answer? Yes and No, I would have to say, so off to Google I go..
Am going to suggest get a cup of tea then watch..

Most of the video goes on about lightroom, have only skimmed through, but the RAW/JPEG explanations at the beginning seem quite good.
You could then have a quick read here:
http://photo.net/learn/raw/
Does have some techy stuff, but not too heavy, but may just add some additional light (see what i did there!) on the subject.
As regards photobox, I don't know it, have tried to Google it, and have not at the moment found any conclusive evidence. So here I would suggest you look at a recent "Tips and Tricks" Thread on this subject and see if it helps?

Work through these, then come back to us if you need more help :)

@archielogical I uses Apple Aperture to edit my RAW files, as per Lightroom can I use *any* of the editing features it has?
May 16th, 2014
@smalbon Stephen, not used Mac's or Aperture, but I believe (unless someone else can tell me different? and I'm sure they will if it isn't) that it is Apples equivalent of Lightroom, so would say yes is the answer :)
May 16th, 2014
@archielogical Thank you Archie, I'll have a look and maybe give it a go
May 16th, 2014
@archielogical Yes, I've used Lightroom on WIndows and Aperture is broadly similar. It's cheaper than Lightroom hence my going for the Apple product when I got my MacBook Pro.
May 16th, 2014
@smalbon Stephen, cant argue with that! I got lightroom when it was in a 20% offer from Adobe, but I am not out for spending cash when something is cheaper and best of all free :) Which is why I'm still a PC Guy and not yet a Mac Guy ;) Good Luck

@archielogical My Mac is leased by my company, so costs me personally nothing at all :)

Very busy scene...I looked at cropping various things but ended up with the following - Back to the Future

Here's my edit. I wanted to emphasize that red boom arm or crane (whatever it is) going over the electrical lines. Crazy!
