**New - Artist Challenge - JAMES ABBOTT WHISTLER**

December 31st, 2017
Happy new year, you wonderful 365ers. To the newcomers, welcome to 365project, the best place in the world-wide web.

Thank you for voting for my composite photograph that was an emulation of Mario Giocomelli's Luna Vedova. I salute the other finalists for a job well done. Thanks also goes to Domenico Dodaro @domenicododaro for hosting that challenge and introducing us to the works of Mr. Giacomelli.

For this first artist challenge for 2018, I have chosen a painter, one who was a believer of "art for art's sake", and who has a rather extensive range of available works for public viewing, and for you fellow 365ers to take inspiration from for this go-round: James Whistler.

James Abbott McNeil Whistler, was an American-born artist. His father, George Whistler, was a prominent civil engineer who at one time was the head of Boston and Albany Railroad. When James was 11, the Whistlers moved to St Petersburg after Nicolas I of Russia offered George a position engineering a railroad in St. Petersburg. A moody child due to his bouts of illnesses, James' parents noted that drawing often settled him down and helped focus his attention. He had his first formal art lessons at age 11. His family stayed in England for about a year while his father worked in Russia and his interest in art and photography was spurred when he met Francis Haden, a physician who was also an artist. After his father died, the Whistlers moved back to Connecticut. James' mother had hoped for him to be a minister, but when it became clear a career in religion did not suit him, he went to study at West Point Academy. However, his only major accomplishment there was learning drawing and map making. In 1855 after deciding that his future would be in art, Whislter moved to Paris where he studied traditional art methods and met several artists, including Charles Baudelaire whose ideas and theories of "modern" art influenced Whistler. Whistler never returned to the States.

Further reading on Whistler's biography can be found in here.

TO VIEW AND CONSIDER HIS WORK, please go here

Whistler influenced the art world and the broader culture of his time with his artistic theories and his friendships with leading artists and writers. His works are varied. There are a lot of portraits, but there are also landscapes and even street scenes, be they in sketches or painting or drawing. There is at least one that you can emulate, be inspired by his style or his subjects.

His most famous painting is "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1" (1871), commonly known as "Whistler's Mother", the revered and oft-parodied portrait of motherhood, which I, myself, had shamelessly emulated for a previous theme of the group @fiveplustwo :

Vikki - I am working on one as we speak. It should be in before the deadline tonight but thought I would give you a heads up in case you are choosing finalists tonight.
Ooops - I thought that it ended tonight but I see I have an extra day to do this ... well ... then I don't have to rush it tonight and can do it properly.
