The Bombe

Better on large view for the detail
This is part of a replica of the Bombe, a code cracking machine used during the second world war.

The original was the brainchild of Alan Turing* and Gordon Welchman. This replica lives at Bletchley Park (as did the original) - once a top secret centre and now known as the home of the code breakers:

I don't understand how it works, I have to confess my reaction to it was to marvel at the construction and admire its good looks.

*There's a shot of a statue of him as my main album photo for today :
Bletchley Park is a great place to visit. It is really amazing what went on there during the war. We visited the Alan Turing exhibition at the Science Museum. This is an interesting shot.

Thank you Alan Turing, hailed by many as "The father of modern comptuing" whose top secret work significantly affected the outcome of WWII but was not thanked for it in his lifetime.

Interesting - and to think what kind of brains were used to put that together. A nice part of history.
